How to Find the Best Keywords for Your Business?

Updated: Aug 14, 2018

If you're a business owner, there is a good chance yuo've tried to figure out that whole SEO (Search Engine Optimization) thing on your own.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, don't worry, just know you're not alone. SEO effects how you rank on google (a search engine). If I'm handyman in in Las Vegas, I want to show up on google is someone types in " Handy man in Las Vegas"...those would be keywords.

It can be a daunting task to get your website optimized for ranking high on google. A lot of business hire other people to take care of this. But again, if you are just starting out, you don't have a budget for that.

So I'm gonna help you. But, we gotta just take it one step at a time. Also know, that tools to increase your SEO don't work overnight, especially if it's anew website because all the data is new. It may take months to a year to start ranking at the top of Google...without paid ads! But you have to start somewhere...better something than nothing! Let's be proactive, right?

I'm gonna help you with this...

First, why are keyword important? Keywords tell google what your content is...so you want to use the right keywords to send the right traffic to your website. And more traffic means more sales!

How do you use keywords? There are a few ways to do this. The most basic way is to use your keywords in your alt-text in your images? Did I just loose you?

Most website have a place to put alt-text within your images. Alt-text tells google what that images is. Generally speaking, if you click an image on your site (in your dashboard) there is probably a setting icon. Click that and you should see a space for Alt-text. This is where you would write your keywords. I would use a couple...5 seems like a good number.

Now...how to find the correct keywords

I recommend using Uber Suggest, It's a free platform to search for keywords. Simply type in a keyword or phase and it will show you a ton of other keywords you can use. remember you want to use more than one. Let's use our handyman example again.

I searched Handyman in Las Vegas...

According to SEO genius Neil Patel you want to choose keywords with a high search volume, high CPC (cost per click), and low competition. You want to choose high search volume because clearly those are the words people use to search, you'll want high CPC because those are valuable keywords ,and low competition because well, who likes competition?

So using the key below I see that "home remodeling" has a super high CPC, pretty high search volume, but the competition is pretty high. But, what you don't see because I cut the screen off, is that some keywords had .80 percent or higher competition. So I think .50 might be doable. With that said, I may use home remodeling in Las Vegas, as a keyword. Make sense? If not send me a message and we can talk more about it!

Second way to find great keywords is Google Adwords

First, make sure you've created your business listing on Google My Business.

Go to Google Adwords and start creating an ad... click "start now". Don't worry, you're not really creating one. It's going to use your email to find you on google. Keep going through the steps until you get here..."define your product or service steps"...

For this example I'm using my google account...google knows I do marketing. So I clicked "Marketing tips for small business" and below under "suggested for you" it gives me a bunch of other keywords for me to use. You see that?? Google itself is telling me what keywords I should use...amazing right?
